401(k) Balance by age 2025
The average 401(k) balance is higher than the median because a small number of people have very large account balances — often from long careers, high incomes, or consistent investing over decades.
Those big accounts pull the average up, even though most savers have much smaller balances.
The median (the middle value) gives a more realistic picture of what a typical person has saved, while the average reflects how much is held across the entire group, including the wealthiest participants.

The Reality
Social Security
A 2025 report from the Social Security Trustees warns that the program’s main trust fund is projected to run out of cash by 2033 — about eight years from now. If Congress doesn’t act, benefits for over 60 million retirees and family members would face an automatic 23% reduction.
Key Drivers of the Shortfall
A new law expanded benefits for nearly 3 million former public-sector workers who weren’t previously covered.
Trustees reduced projections for future wages, birth rates, and payroll tax revenue.
More Americans are claiming benefits earlier, worried about future cuts.
The U.S. population is aging rapidly, with over 11,000 baby boomers reaching retirement age daily — leaving fewer workers to fund each retiree’s benefits.
As a result of these changes, the insolvency deadline moved up by about a year compared with earlier estimates.
Currently, once the main fund runs out, payroll taxes will only cover about 77% of promised benefits. The disability trust fund remains solvent through 2099, and if both were combined, benefits could be paid in full until 2034, after which a 19% cut would still occur without reform.
